Billy arrived at Dumbarton in 1981 after a successful spell as East Stirlingshire manager. He guided Dumbarton to the promotion places in early 1984 before taking on the Falkirk manager's job. He guided the Bairns to promotion to the Premier Division in 1985/86 but resigned the following year and took the reins at Partick Thistle. He returned to Falkirk in 1989 but was only in the position for six months. Billy returned to Boghead in April 1990 and led the Sons to the Second Division title in 1991/92 and consolidated the club's position in the First Division the following season before leaving to take over at Alloa Athletic.
