First Team Debuts
Milestones
AND so it goes on.
The clock has now reached 74 days. When Dumbarton scored through Ally Roy against Livingston on Boxing Day, little did they know that it would be their last league goal until at least March 13.
This game, against Queen of the South, once again saw the two teams well matched. Sons should not have lost it.
They did for one simple reason. The Doonhamers managed to put the ball in the net, through Dom Thomas on 47 minutes. Even from the penalty spot, Dumbarton couldn't score.
That opportunity presented itself midway through the second half, but Kevin Nisbet blasted the spot kick over. It was by no means the only clear chance of the afternoon.
Queens dominated the early stages, but Scott Gallacher was alert to save from Stephen Dobbie, and then Scott Mercer's cross which was deflected towards goal.
He then couldn't stop Kyle Jacobs finding the net from the resulting corner, but the midfielder did use his hands, and the goal was ruled out.
Danny Handling then twice went close, the latter effort seeing the ball spin loose from the keeper's save, but Sam Wardrop too was denied.
When Liam Dick's shot was cleared off the line after Nisbet played the ball back, this already had 'one of those days' written all over it.
Gallacher made another save from Thomas before Kyle Hutton volleyed wide when well placed.
But two minutes into the second half, Queens were awarded a free kick on the corner of the area. Thomas scored twice on their second visit to Dumbarton last season, and added another to his tally from the set piece.
Sons struggled initially to fight back, but on 68 minutes, Handling's free kick saw Dobbie penalised for handball in the area.
It was Dumbarton's first league penalty for a week short of a year, but Nisbet was some way off target.
Andy Dowie and Dimitris Froxylias then had efforts saved as time ran out before Gallacher did well to save from Todorov in injury time.
Another matchday, another blank sheet when a better result was there to be gained.
